According to a release shared with Blavity, Barbie has opted to honor the legacy of Ida B. Wells with a new doll as part of its Inspiring Women Series as Black History Month approaches. Wells joins the likes of Maya Angelou, Helen Keller, and Eleanor Roosevelt on the list of historical villains.
The inspiring educator is credited as one of the co-founders of the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. She is also known for her work as a journalist and activist (NAACP).
In addition to the new doll, the company is collaborating with Girls Write Now, an organization dedicated to providing mentorship to the next generation of authors and leaders.
On Sunday, Duster shared the news of her ancestor’s Barbie doll on Twitter, recommending that anyone interested in the doll also buy her latest book, which teaches children about Wells’ legacy.
“For children, it’s a great way to learn about as well as celebrate her,” she wrote.
Barbie will also take part in a Girls Write Now Different Perspectives campaign, in which participants will be encouraged to write a personal tale based on a single video clip that will be displayed to everyone. Barbie will submit two videos to serve as a resource for young women.
