Jason Brown, Once The Highest-Paid Center In The NFL Walked Away To Become A Farmer

Jason Brown spent seven years in the NFL, starting with the Baltimore Ravens as a fourth-round draft pick before signing a five-year, $37.5 million deal with the St. Louis Rams. Brown said on TODAY that he was once the highest-paid professional center in the NBA. Despite the bright future ahead of him, he felt a higher calling on his life, which he refused to ignore.

The life of his brother, Lunsford B. Brown II, who died in 2003 while serving in Iraq, inspired the former football player. When he compared his 27 years to his brother’s, he understood that he, too, wanted to use his abilities for the greater good.

Brown was offered a chance to return to the Baltimore Ravens, but he wanted to try something new and become a farmer. Brown sold his mansion and relocated to North Carolina to start First Fruits Farm.

“People tell me I’m crazy, they downright tell me that I’m stupid okay to walk away from millions of dollars,” Jason Brown said in an interview on the Tamron Hall Show. “Because if you have the opportunity to play in the NFL then it’s supposed to be a no-brainer.”

Despite having no prior farming expertise, Jason, his wife Tay Brown, and their eight children took on the task of tending the 1,000 acres with the help of YouTube.

“Seeing my children when we aren’t out there in the farm field and knowing that they’re learning life skills to help feed them and their families for generations to come, that is the blessing of a farm,” Jason Brown said in an interview with TODAY.

The family had intended to give the first fruits of each harvest to local households, but due to increased demand, they had to donate everything. Through Jason Brown’s Wisdom For Life program, First Fruits Farm has provided nearly a million pounds of food as of February 2022.

“People tell me I’m crazy, they downright tell me that I’m stupid okay to walk away from millions of dollars,” Jason Brown said in an interview on the Tamron Hall Show. “Because if you have the opportunity to play in the NFL then it’s supposed to be a no-brainer.”
