Kerry Washington, an actress and producer, paid tribute to actress Pam Grier on Instagram and Twitter.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the now 72-year-old performer played seductive, powerful, and clever Black women on film and television, notably the character Foxy Brown. According to IMDb, she is credited as being one of the first Black female stars in New World Pictures’ early 1970s Blaxploitation, action, and prison films.
In a side-by-side Instagram photo, Washington paid tribute to the legendary actress. Grier wore a rounded Afro with gold hoop earrings and a floral, red button-down shirt with a gold chain, and Washington flawlessly recreated the style.
“#BlackHERstory is BACK! I had soooooooo much fun dressing up as one of my heroes, Pam Grier. Pam is considered one of the first female action stars and QUEEN of the Blaxploitation era. She proved that Black women, and ALL women on film could be strong, tenacious and crazy sexy at the same time. The first time I saw Jackie Brown I was in delighted awe. Grier brought electric subversive complexity and brilliance to that role, at time when women’s roles (especially in action movies) were either non-existent or extremely stereotypical. She’s a true queen of her craft and I’m so honored to celebrate her in this way! ” Washington posted on Instagram.
As previously reported by Blavity, Olympian Wilma Rudolph was recognized in Washington for Black History Month.
